Why You'll Love Winter Fishing
BC's south coast where we guide generally sees mild temperatures during the winter months which means we don't hang up the rods once fall salmon season ends. We jump right into our winter fly fishing program, chasing those big bull trout that are gorging on the flesh and eggs left behind by chum and coho salmon. River conditions are usually low and clear, so we fish light gear, swinging small steamers, egg patters and have a few other secret trips up our sleeve. Don't worry, we'll tell you exactly what to wear so you enjoy a comfortable day, even if it's a bit frosty.
Logistics for Your Day
A Winter Day Rundown
We generally start a bit later in the morning on the winter guided days. Let the day warm up a bit and enjoy a coffee. You'll meet your guide and then we head out with us to explore the upper Squamish River or the Cheakamus River, two rivers that we've spent over 20 years guiding on. We offer a variety of trip options, though full-day and half-day walk and wade trips are best for the winter and offer some time to warm up between spots.
Winter Bull Trout
Its a Rodeo
As you've gathered, our winter fly fishing trips focus on chasing bull trout. Bull trout are native to the Pacific Northwest and the fishery we enjoy here in Squamish is pretty unique. Bull trout get their name because of the flat tops of their heads that resemble that of a bull. Bull trout feed heavily in the winter months, gorging themselves on salmon eggs and flesh. In the spring months they feed on salmon fry. Average size of bull trout is 12-15 inches but 20+ inches aren't rare, we just need a hungry one.
Fun Fact
Did you know that "Squamish" is derived from a Coast Salish term meaning "Mother of the Wind," referencing cold winds that blow through the valley in winter.

Close to Whistler
If you're visiting Whistler on a ski trip then some winter fly fishing is only 35 minutes away. We have a ton of visitors who are on a ski trip come fish with us in December, January and February. Skip the long lift lineups and enjoy a peaceful day (with a lot less vertical). Our guided trips are conveniently located between Vancouver and Whistler.
What to Wear
Everyone wants to know how cold it is and what to wear. Winter on the rivers really isn't that cold and layering is key. Warm socks, quality underlayers, some mittens and a toque (Canadian for beanie) will keep you warm while fly fishing. Thermos of coffee, some handwarms and some short hikes and you'll be toasty all day.
River Conditions
The rivers we fish are free flowing wild rivers. There are instances when river conditions aren't optimal for a safe and fun trip. This happens if there are multiple days of heavy rains or freezing levels spike high. Don't worry, communication for us is key, we'll give you as much heads up as possible if there is a likelihood river levels won't be good. Trips cancelled due to weather or water conditions are fully-refundable or we can get you rebooked, your choice.
