Fall fly fishing in BC

Wild Rivers and Wilder Fish

While we offer guided fly fishing on the Squamish River year-round, October and November are the best months for targeting coho salmon. Our fall fly fishing focuses on river sections closest to the ocean, where salmon are fresh, aggressive, and still chrome bright. This area comes alive in the fall — hundreds of bald eagles line the riverbanks, and it's common to see elk and black bears along the shoreline. This area is true British Columbia wilderness and our guides will be by your side to let you experience these wild rivers and wilder fish!

What to Expect

A Fall Day Rundown

Your day starts by meeting your guide in Squamish, BC, then heading out with us to explore the wild rivers coastal rivers that we've spent over 20 years guiding on. We bring all the gear, and if you've booked a drift the boat is already loaded and ready to go. The pace is easy, covering water, learning as you go, and sharing a few laughs along the way. In the fall we often focus on the lower Squamish for salmon fresh from the ocean, and the remote upper river, that's a favorite. We also guide on the smaller Cheakamus River, that sees some big coho returns throughout the Fall. Each area offers a different feel but the same goal: a relaxed day outside with good fishing. No matter your experience level, we'll make sure the day feels comfortable, safe, and memorable.

Gear Info

All fishing gear is available on our guided trips for a small rental fee. If you're planning to bring your own setup, here are a few helpful guidelines for fall salmon fly fishing in BC: We generally fish single handed 8-weight rods. These are great for stripping flies for coho salmon. Two-handed spey rods help to cover the bigger water. We have tons of flies, but if you want to bring your own, they should range from small and sparse to larger flashy patterns when the vis is lower.

Fall Tips

We're hoping you fish with us, but if you're headed out solo, here are a few tips we use daily on the river: Don't wade deep, salmon often travel in 2–3 feet of water close to shore. Be patient, coho salmon move through in waves, especially near the ocean. Downsize your fly, smaller, lightly weighted flies often outperform large patterns. And most importantly always respect the fish, keep salmon in the water, handle quickly, and revive before release.

River Conditions

The rivers we fish are free flowing wild rivers. There are instances when river conditions aren't optimal for a safe and fun trip. This happens if there are multiple days of heavy rains or freezing levels spike high. Don't worry, communication for us is key, we'll give you as much heads up as possible if there is a likelihood river levels won't be good. Trips cancelled due to weather or water conditions are fully-refundable or we can get you rebooked, your choice.
