Gold River Steelhead Trips

Winter Steelhead Guided Fishing on Vancouver Island

There are few rivers as famous for winter-run steelhead fishing as the Gold River on Vancouver Island.  During the winter months wild steelhead roll out from the salty waters of Nootka Sound and make their way up the Gold.  Gold fish are known for their size, their chrome bright coloring and their fight.  Our guided steelhead fishing on the Gold River is a must of any serious steelhead angler.

Winter Steelhead of the Gold River

Vancouver Island is home to plenty of rivers that maintain wild steelhead runs, but none are as famous as the Gold River.  The Gold River empties into Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island’s central west coast.  It is a wild river, void of dams or hatchery steelhead.

Guided trips on the Gold River start in December and go through April.  Fishing is consistent through these months, with peak months usually being January, February and March.

Winter steelhead fishing on Vancouver Island and on the Gold River doesn’t come without challenges though.  The weather is often cool and wet and sometimes inconsistent water levels force fish to move around.  The rewards for anglers up to the challenge are spectacular though.  Gold River steelhead pull hard and are true ‘chromers’, wild and bright ranging from 5 to 25 pounds!

Planning Your Gold River Fishing Trip

Chromer Sport Fishing makes planning a Gold River fishing trip seamless. When you book your trip with us we’ll get you hooked up with our licensed guide Curtis Smith and make sure you get some prime fishing dates.

Traveling to Vancouver Island, where the Gold River is located, is easy, but will take some planning because it involves catching a ferry from Vancouver over to Vancouver Island and then about a two hour drive to the town of Campbell River.

Campbell River, about an hour from the Gold is where we suggest our guests stay. There are better accommodation options than in the town of Gold River. There are also no restaurants anymore in Gold River.
