Squamish Steelhead Fishing

SPRING STEELHEAD FISHING

PRIME TIME MARCH TO MAY

Spring steelhead fishing isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s not a fishery were fish come easy, we earn ever single steelhead that comes to hand. If you’re looking for an action trip with tons of fish, this isn’t it. But, if you’re looking for a genuine BC steelhead fishing experience on some beautiful rivers with our great guide staff, then you’ll enjoy the fishing experiences we offer in Squamish.

Squamish River steelhead live in funky spots, they’re not your typical fish and you find them in some secret places that only the most experienced guides can stick you in. We swing flies, mainly bright coloured intruder fly patterns and often make many many casts before a fish climbs on. These are wild steelhead, a rewarding prize to those with persistence. The best time to come steelhead fishing with us is anytime from early March to early May and it is a good idea to book early, we are always very busy that time of year. Opting for a drift trip is a great option for steelhead season, it give you the ability to fish lots of water and definitely ups the chances at connecting with a fish.

WHERE WE FISH IN SQUAMISH

ADAPTING TO VARYING SEASONS

We have a variety of rivers to fish, the Squamish River is built for swung fly fishing, with long expansive runs and beautiful hold water for fish. In the early Spring season our fishing focus is on the lower Squamish River, fishing sections only a few kilometres from open ocean. Steelhead here are chrome bright, often with sea lice on them and they crush flies. As we move later in our Spring season our focus is on fly fishing for steelhead on the upper Squamish River, a rugged wilderness valley where we’ve called home for the past 20+ years. This is wild country, we often see mountain goats on the high cliffs, elk in the valley and even grizzly bears roaming the back channels.

Summer season is spent trout fishing smaller tributaries including the Cheakamus, Ashlu & Mamquam rivers. These are home to resident rainbow and bull trout. On odd years there are Pink Salmon on the lower Squamish, this is a great action-packed fishery! Our Fall season has us on the lower and upper Squamish River as well as the Cheakamus, chasing Pacific salmon on the fly.

Fall Fly Fishing

FLY FISHING FOR SALMON

IN OCTOBER & NOVEMBER

Fall is when we shift our focus to fishing for Pacific salmon on the Squamish. October and November are prime time for coho and chum salmon. This is one of our favourite times of year with fresh fish rolling off the saltwater of Howe Sound. Often the salmon we catch are only a few kilometres from open ocean. We offer guided day trips and have package information on our Fall Salmon Package page. This is a very busy time for us, so booking early is always a good idea.

Bull Trout Fishing Squamish BC

BULL TROUT FISHING IN SQUAMISH

TROUT FISHING IS YEAR-ROUND

Trout fishing in Squamish is a year-round event, with a variety of different trout species in local rivers. Bull trout are the most prevalent species and average in size from 12-24 inches. These are native trout that can be caught year-round. Winter is a popular time for bull trout fishing as they feed on the remnants of the Fall salmon runs. Bulls and rainbow trout can be caught in the Spring and Summer months as well. One of our favourite bull trout flies is the Mister March.

Fly Fishing Gear

GEARING UP FOR A TRIP

FLIES & GEAR FOR FISHING SQUAMISH

If you’re coming on a guided day with us you’re welcome to bring your own gear or we can provide top notch wading gear and fly fishing equipment for a rental charge of $39. If you’re planning on fishing on your own then a 2 handed spey rod in a 7-8 weight is a great rod. Single handed rods we fish are in the 6-8 weight range, good for throwing heavier flies. A variety of sink tips is critical, Type III & VI are our go to tips and MOW tips fish nice as well. Fly choice isn’t as important as how you fish it on the Squamish, but if you were to have one fly, that catches everything, then the Hobo Spey is tough to beat.
