SQUAMISH RIVER SALMON FISHING

FLY FISHING FOR SALMON CLOSE TO VANCOUVER

Our guided fly fishing day trips to the Squamish River are offered year-round but if you’re interested in targeting chum and coho salmon you’ll want to aim for an October or November timeframe. The fishing we do is mainly focused on the sections of river closest to the ocean, targeting clean chrome fish as they come off the saltwater. This is the best area for fresh chum and coho salmon. The area is home to hundreds of eagles in the Fall months and it’s not uncommon to see elk and black bears. We offer a variety of guided experiences, from half-day trips, to full-day trips to our popular river drifts.

Chum salmon range from 8-20 pounds. They’re a great fighting fish and the Squamish River is home to a healthy return of chum salmon each Fall. Coho salmon, also known as silver salmon, are in the 5-12 pound range. These are aerobatic fish that crush flies. Have a look at the full feature done on our company with Fishing BC & The Fly Fishing Journal, it will give you a good idea of what to expect!

COHO FISHING CRAZINESS!

FALL FLY FISHING INFO

Coho salmon, also known as Silver salmon in the US, are our targeted species during the Fall salmon runs. The past few years we’ve had very strong coho salmon returns on the Squamish River. These acrobatic fish range from 5-12 pounds and crush flies. We fish a variety of streamers and attractor patterns for coho salmon in slow and slack moving water. A fun fishery and a big part of our Fall salmon packages!

GEARING UP FOR FALL SALMON

FLY FISHING GEAR FOR SALMON FISHING

Before we get into gear needed, it is important to point out all fishing gear is included on our trips for a small rental fee. That said, if you’re interested in gearing yourself up for Fall salmon fishing here are a few ideas and recommendations to get you started…

You’ll want a good quality fly rod. Single handed rods are best in 7-9 weight ranges. For double-handed spey rods an 8 weight will serve you well. If you can, carry both a single handed rod and a double handed rod when fishing. We bring both on our guided trips, as some of the fishing we do requires shorter casts and stripping action on flies. That’s when we use a single handed rod with a full intermediate sinking line. Spey rods are great for covering water and longer casts. A variety of sink tips are important, with Type III and Type VI being the two most used. A good reel is needed for Fall salmon season as these fish love to take line, so a solid drag is important. Having a collection of small to medium sized flies is key. Smaller flies for clear water conditions and bigger flies when rivers offer less clarity.

FALL SALMON FISHING TIPS

IF YOU’RE HEADED OUT ON YOUR OWN

Having a guide is nice but if you’re headed out salmon fishing on your own we wanted to give you a few tips. These are simply tips we use when guiding and will hopefully help you catch a few more fish… Don’t wade deep. This is the most common mistake, as most salmon are often close to shore in 2-3 feet of water.Be patient. Salmon come through in waves, especially if you’re fishing close to the ocean. Rolling fish are an indicator that salmon are moving through. Downsize your fly. It’s a common mistake to use big heavy flies for salmon. Most of the fish we catch are on small, sparsely tied flies that have a light amount of weight to them! Here’s the Hobo Spey Fly, a Fall salmon and steelhead favourite.

Be respectful of these fish. Never drag salmon onto sand or rocks and ensure all fish are kept in the water. If you’re taking a photo do it quickly and ensure the fish is revived before releasing. Read the BC freshwater fishing synopsis before heading out, use only single barbless hooks and ensure you have you BC fishing license with you at all times!
