FEBRUARY FISHING IN BC

FIND A FISHING TRIP IN FEBRUARY

February marks the beginning of Spring in British Columbia and the start of some exciting fishing to be had around the province. River levels are still low but are on the rise as temperatures warm and fish become more active. There are a variety of trips in February, though they are dependent on favourable weather and water conditions. Here’s what you’ll find in BC for February fishing trips…

VANCOUVER & SQUAMISH FISHING OPTIONS

There are a few options near Vancouver for good fishing in February, they include; saltwater salmon fishing, fly fishing for trout, targeting steelhead and the start of the sturgeon season on the Fraser River. Salmon fishing on the ocean around Vancouver is good all through the Winter months and continues in February, especially in the Howe Sound area, which is accessible on day trips from Vancouver. Our Vancouver salmon fishing trips in February will also give you the opportunity to drop prawn and crab traps. On the trout fishing front river levels tend to bump a little bit in February and if it’s not too cold we can have some good trout fishing on our guided fly fishing trips. These take place in the Squamish River valley about an hour north of Vancouver. Steelhead fishing is best on the Vedder River, east of Vancouver in February. The Vedder usually has some stronger numbers of fish in the system at this time. As for sturgeon fishing, the season is just beginning to kick off in late February, granted weather conditions aren’t too cold. If you’re excited about a Fraser River sturgeon fishing trip we might get you to wait until a bit later in the Spring. Definitely some cool options in the Vancouver area for a February fishing trip.

FEBRUARY FISHING ON VANCOUVER ISLAND

Vancouver Island is a popular fishing location in February, there’s some solid options for both freshwater and saltwater fishing nearly Island wide this time of year. On the freshwater front February is one of our favourite times to go to Vancouver Island for some steelhead fishing. You’ll find some healthy numbers of fish on the south, central and north Island rivers. These are fisheries that are good for both fly anglers and conventional gear fisherman. Keep expectations in check, conditions and fishing can both be fickle, but the reward of a chrome bright Vancouver Island steelhead is without a doubt worth the hard work it takes to find one. Saltwater fishing on Vancouver Island is also an option, you’ll find charters offering trips on the south and east coast central Island. If you’re looking for some salmon fishing on Vancouver Island in February your best bet will be a fishing charter in Comox or a guided salmon trip in Campbell River.

TIPS FOR WINTER FISHING IN BC

Be sure to prep yourself for any condition in February. Generally temperatures are cold and Winter is still in full effect, but on warmer years Spring can come early and late February can offer some good fishing if things warm up. Pack and dress for variable conditions. Know water temps are always going to be cold, so if you’re freshwater fishing pack as much warm layering and socks as you can. If you’re planning some saltwater fishing then warm layering and high quality rain gear are essentials. If you’re looking around at options keep in mind it really only is Vancouver Island and Southwestern BC that offer any good angling options. The rest of the province is still the heavy Winter conditions and unless you want to stare at a hole in the ice, there aren’t any options outside of Vancouver or Vancouver Island.
