Spring is also a great time for winter steelhead fishing on Vancouver Island and around the Whistler area during the months of April and May. You can count on rivers in southern British Columbia and Vancouver Island to blow out due to the melting of the snow pack around early to mid May. At this time river become unfishable due to poor visibility conditions and often reach near flood like flows.

Summer weather conditions in BC are usually pretty pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 23 - 30 degrees Celsius (74 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit). Because of British Columbia’s northern location, summer days are always long, with the sun going down around 10 pm making for plenty of time to fish.

Can’t make it up steelhead fishing? Don’t worry, the other great bit of fishing that starts during the Fall months in BC is river fishing for salmon. Millions of salmon return each year to spawn in the rivers they were born and anglers in British Columbia start seeing some amazing fishing province wide and even near major centers like Vancouver. There are five species of Pacific salmon that migrate here and during October and November is when the Chum salmon and Coho salmon make their way into BC’s rivers. This is the time most fly anglers usually plan their trips.

During the winter months of December, January and February there is some river fly fishing right around the Vancouver area and some options on Vancouver Island as well. Although not the best time for fishing a day spent on a snow dusted river bank fishing for native Bull trout is something not found in too many spots around the globe.
