- When is the best time to plan a British Columbia fly fishing trip?
-
This is the question we get the most and there is no one specific answer. The easiest way to answer is to break down our fly fishing opportunities in British Columbia into the different seasons of the year. This will give you an idea of what is happening as there are places to fly fish in BC year-round!
Spring - This is traditionally the best time for lake and stillwater fly fishing in British Columbia. The ice is coming off the lakes of BC’s Interior region and the bit of warmth allows lakes to come alive with insect life and rainbow trout begin to feed aggressively after a long winter of sitting dormant. This Spring time during the months of April, May and into June is when we consider the best lake fishing in British Columbia.
Spring is also a great time for winter steelhead fishing on Vancouver Island and around the Whistler area during the months of April and May. You can count on rivers in southern British Columbia and Vancouver Island to blow out due to the melting of the snow pack around early to mid May. At this time river become unfishable due to poor visibility conditions and often reach near flood like flows.
Summer - Lots of fly fishing is to be had all around British Columbia during the summer months. Fishing options are pretty much endless during this time, from a fly-in fishing trip to an alpine lake accessed only by floatplane or fly fishing a river for salmon to skating dry flies for steelhead, it is no wonder summer time is the most popular time in British Columbia to fish.
Summer weather conditions in BC are usually pretty pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 23 - 30 degrees Celsius (74 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit). Because of British Columbia’s northern location, summer days are always long, with the sun going down around 10 pm making for plenty of time to fish.
Fall - This is steelhead season in northern BC. Steelhead anglers from around the world flock to British Columbia starting in mid August to prepare for the annual return of steelhead to the world famous rivers. During September and October it is prime time for great steelhead fishing and the lodges and guides we represent are buzzing and busy with satisfied anglers.
Can’t make it up steelhead fishing? Don’t worry, the other great bit of fishing that starts during the Fall months in BC is river fishing for salmon. Millions of salmon return each year to spawn in the rivers they were born and anglers in British Columbia start seeing some amazing fishing province wide and even near major centers like Vancouver. There are five species of Pacific salmon that migrate here and during October and November is when the Chum salmon and Coho salmon make their way into BC’s rivers. This is the time most fly anglers usually plan their trips.
Winter - Ok, we appreciate winter fly fishing isn’t for everybody but if you are visiting British Columbia, maybe for a ski vacation or a conference in Vancouver, and you’re interested in some fly-fishing options there is something for you.
During the winter months of December, January and February there is some river fly fishing right around the Vancouver area and some options on Vancouver Island as well. Although not the best time for fishing a day spent on a snow dusted river bank fishing for native Bull trout is something not found in too many spots around the globe.
